CURRENT ACTIVITIES
A number of meetings have taken place with local history societies, performance groups and individuals to explore possible developments and partnerships.
Those which are currently on-going include:
– Partnership with University of Winchester’s Faculty of Law, Crime and Justice to develop an annual HISTORY OF LAW Lecture focused on Criminal Justice in 1820-1830
– Partnership with !nVerse, music and voice group, to develop collaborative shows with local community groups to tell the SWING story
– Development of a team of speakers to present a standard/off-the-shelf account of the SWING Riots in Hampshire
– Development of a show based on the long poem Micheldever by J.R Ackerley in conjunction with Arthur Wood and Professor Christopher Mulvey initially in St. Mary’s,Micheldever but then to travel
– Development of a poetry and readings programme ‘Verse and Prose of the Captain Swing Era’ with Arthur Wood and Professor Christopher Mulvey
– Identification of GUEST SPEAKER for the first Annual Captain Swing Historical lecture
– Proposals for the Wellington Congress 2025 at the University of Southampton

– initial work on the new SWING website within the English Project’s revamped site
– negotiations with Jill Chambers over digitisation of Hampshire Machine Breakers
– exploration of possible funding for community drama (notably a SWING WOMEN show with 2Time Theatre) by University of Southampton and/or Arts Council
INVITATIONS to appear/speak at:
– Havant Local History Event (early February 2024)
– Hampshire Local Authorities Conference (October 2024) FRESH ACTIONS to be undertaken soon include
– solidification of organisational structure
– creation of a formal Supporters’ Group
– initial thinking about Grand Assize Re-enactment in 2030
YEAR 1: 2024-2025 Targets
ANNOUNCEMENT SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 2024 of Inaugural 2024/25 programme
– Launch the new Captain Swing in Hampshire website as a focus for compilation of SWING story, promotion and recording of events etc.
– Develop partnership arrangements with FIVE SWING communities
– Launch of series of standard lectures/panel sessions ‘What were the Captain Swing Riots and why
do they matter?’ to be available county-wide through local history/community organisations etc. – First in annual series of ENGLISH PROJECT Swing-themed lectures
– First in series of annual LAW lectures with Swing-related theme
– First in annual series of GUEST LECTURES on SWING and its repercussions
– Take part in Winchester Heritage Open Days (HODs September 2024 with one spoken and one performance event
– Hold at least ONE music/word Swing event in a SWING village EF 13-12-23
The English Project, launched the world’s first English Language Day in 2009 to mark the first occasion on which English was used in Parliament and to raise awareness of the estimated 7,000 varieties of English spoken in 100 countries worldwide.
This first Parliamentary speech in English, rather than in French, was made on 13th October 1362. In the same Parliament, a Statute of Pleading was approved that also permitted debate and law-making in English.
